The manufacture of steel results in slag or Sludge being formed. Slag is an agglomerate that floats to the surface of the steel. Slag is useful in preparing mineral wool.
The usual manner of obtaining mineral wool is by placing the slag into a furnace. The dumping of the fine slag into the furnace results in a plating out of the slag on the bottom of the furnace. When the slag plates out on the bottom of the furnace, the first effect is that the slag is no longer available for mineral wool manufacture. Secondly, the build-up of the slag causes ineffective heat transfer in the furnace thereby requiring greater thermal energy and eventually requiring a shut-down of the furnace to remove the built-up slag.
The obvious solution is to make briquettes of slag and use it.
The briquettes of the slag are prepared by mixing together the Slag, Binding agent and Water. The material is mixed thoroughly using sufficient energy input to ensure a substantially homogenous product. The mixture of the slag, Binding agent and water is then emptied into a mould of suitable size and compressed to form the briquette. The amount of pressure and the duration necessary to form the briquette may be determined experimentally.
It is then removed from moulding press and either sun dried or oven dried (50" to 200" C) to reduce the moisture contents of the shaped mixture to preferable less than 3.5% by weight to form Briquette.
The briquettes are found to be suitable for use in the manufacture of mineral wool. There is a minimal amount of breaking and flaking off of portions of the briquette which would be undesirable.
BINDING AGENT
Poly vinyl Alcohol 15% Solution PVA 15% solution was used in the past as Binding agent. However it is very expensive to use as it has to be procured from the manufacturer of PVA solution and is expensive as it contains 85% water and cost of transportation of this 85% water and packing and storage charges are heavy. Besides this it is non-biodegradable as it is Thermo plastic and being in liquid condition support fungus and bacterial growth.
???? To manufacture PVA at site is also not practical as it requires expertise, different set of reactors, additional personnel and also is time consuming ??process.
Cellulose Ether This is very recent development for use as Binder in Slag Briquetting. It is available in granular form and does not have any harmful effect associated with using PVA solution. It is also very economical to use as the slurry of cellulose Ether can be prepared at site using cold water and mixing it well or Cellulose Ether Granules can be directly added to the slag.
A preferred range for the slag and the Cellulose Ether is from 1 to 4 parts Cellulose Ether and from 60 to 90 parts slag. The amount of cold water added in the process is from about 5 to 12 parts, preferably about 6 to 11 parts by weight
